This example is from the package for a home theater receiver manufactured by a large, well-known consumer electronics company.
Although we did not have the foresight to keep a copy, we have reconstructed the example from memory.
We greeted the bold, neon message with suspicion. Although we followed the set-up instructions in the user guide carefully, the home theater receiver produced no sound.
After 30 minutes of detective work, we found the problem: a critical option missing from the user guide.
No doubt the manufacturer did not want customers to return perfectly good home theater receivers, but the technical support cost to talk callers through the installation process must have been mind-boggling!
Even if there was no time to revise the user guide, the manufacturer could have put the missing instructions on the neon pink sheet.
